RAW

I’ve had nothing good to say about my newly acquired Canon camera – as well as Canon cameras in general – in my introductory post, which however doesn’t mean I don’t like it. It’s kinda the same as with people – you can be likeable and retarded at the same time, but for practical purposes I have to always keep your handicap in mind.

Shooting in aperture priority mode, no matter the camera, is in itself a hit and miss affair, it’s just that this camera is heavily biased toward ‘miss’. Then there’s low dynamic range, poor low light performance, terrible jpeg processing and almost cartoonish colors – but that’s just Canon being Canon.

So what is there left to like? First of all, it’s small and light; and second, it’s actually perfectly capable of making pictures like this when you keep all its flaws in mind and use it accordingly. But most importantly: it forced me to shoot RAW in order to squeeze something out of it, and oh shit, it’s like I’m rediscovering photography.

Yeah. After years of shooting jpegs I now realize that faggots were right all along: RAW really is the truth. And Lightroom is really not that hard to figure out once you get past the ‘import’ screen.
